Kindergarten is all about reading!! This is the year we all learn our letters and really jump into reading everyday. Everything from our Superkid stories, Franklin, Curious George, Dr. Seuss and Elephant & Piggie pops up in our day. We read easy reader books as well as non-fiction, and chapter books. Kindergarten is a great place to learn that we can read to discover new things and we can also read for fun. Learning about a blizzard, tornadoes, snakes, teeth, and Martin Luther King Jr. are all exciting when we have pictures and fun facts to read about. Non- fiction stories of every sort seem to be a favorite here. It gives children a chance to be responsible for their own learning, and helps answer some of those curious questions. Fiction is also a great way to learn about God, friendship, sharing, kindness and faith. Reading a book opens our eyes to a whole new world where we can meet new friends and experience new things.
St. Viator has adopted the Superkids reading program and I could not be more excited about it. This is my fourth year teaching Superkids and I really believe in the program. It teaches a new letter about every 8 days, and slowly introduces the kids to reading by giving them the tools to blend sounds and read words all on their own. Each letter is introduced with a new character who has a different hobby and characteristics. All the students have a different favorite Superkid, who they relate to and have fun learning about. Their different catchy theme songs also help to grab a few fans. Not only are our students learning to read but they are also learning about punctuation, characters, setting, friendship, sharing, responsibility, expression, and much more. The fun activities and leveled readers make it fun and easy to differentiate for all students every day. Superkids is a great program that can help the struggling reader, and also motivate and challenge the more advanced reader.
